Default Clutch or Tranny problem?

I have a problem with my 94 integra GSR and im not sure if its the clutch or tranny. Sometimes i cant get my car into 1st gear when im stopped at a red light when the light turns green. It'll only go in half way, and then i would have to fource it the rest of the way, or put the car back into nuetral and pump the clutch pedal afew times before it'll go into 1st.

Also, i noticed that the clutch dosent grab at the same point anymore. It grabs at a much higher point. Like when the clutch pedal is almost completeley released, then it will finally grab.

Im not sure if the clutch is going bad and its not grabbing or making it hard to get into 1st gear, or if the 1st gear syncro is going bad making it hard to get into first. Every other gear is fine. Just 1st is gear is hard to get into. And the clutch grabs at a higher point. Would this be a problem with the clutch or tranny? Also, when i release the clutch, it dosent grab smoothly. It grabs kinda rough. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

sounds like your slave cylinder is going out. im not sure about 94 integras whether they have a cable or hydrolic clutch but i know the 01 does.maybe someone can help me out on this. but my girls civic had the similar problem because the slave cylinder had a leak. easy fix for her civic and if your teg has a hydrolic clutch then it is an easy fix too

Being hard to go into first gear is normal. The tranny doesn't have synchros on first gear, so sometimes it takes a few tries to get it in. As far as your clutch grabbing late, that's what happens when clutches get worn. As long as the clutch isn't slipping, you're ok.

You will know if your clutch is slipping when you go to accelerate and your rpms rise, but your mph stay the same. If your friend says your tranny is slipping chances are that he might be feeling your clutch slip.

Hmmmmm, its starting to sound more like my clutch is slipping. Cuz my clutch dosent actually grab until i hit 2 and a half to almost 3 rpm. Is that normal or is that to much? Would a clutch job fix my problem? How much does a clutch job usually run for? Thanks for everyone's help

the clutch engagement isn't dependant on the revs.. It's dependant on the clutch pedal position..

I could hold the clutch pedal right below engagement and give more throttle all the way up to 7k.. and then state the clutch didn't grab until 7k

A clutch slip would feel like this.. suppose your were cruising @a fixed mph, if you push in the clutch all of the sudden the revs will climb very quickly but you wouldn't make any forward progress.. ie your car would not accelerate.

you basically stated it here yourself.. it's dependant on the pedal position.

Have you tried bleeding the clutch system? you might be replacing a slave cylinder shortly

Actually, i had the clutch cylinder replaced before, and the clutch bleeded. That was about half a year ago. And this problem didnt surface until after that. It wasnt as bad at first, but gradually got worst until now.

hrm.. the fact that you are having to pump the clutch on occasion makes me lean towards the hydro system.

Bleeding it again is a good place to start.

Also, how many miles are on your clutch?

I had a similar problem. Maybe my story can help. I had a very small leak on the slave cylinder. It was an odd leak in which fluid would leak out and then get sucked back in. Difficult to explain but the metal hose lines for the fluid was not tighten well, so the fluid will leak out and build up around the nut when I press the clutch down, when I let off the clutch it sucks it back in gradually sucking up air as well. Took me months to notice it.

So, suggest checking your lines and bleed them again, or double check the cluch pedal setting, maybe at the install they didn't adjust it to OEM spec.

Hope that helps,
Mike
