went to get my air fixed and he says i need to get these replaced bc they are dry rotted and will prob bust loose soon. its gonna be about $320. is this a fair price, and does it really need to be done?

 

If you can do the work yourself, go to a Auto parts and get half moon CV replacement boots and change them your self, all for, less than $30

 

I don't think much of the split CV boots. It's hard for me to belive that they will maintain a good seal for any length of time.

It's a little more labor but the CV half shaft assemblies are pretty darn cheap. I've seen remans at rockauto.com for about $50 each and you get all new bearings a complete CV boot, etc. The core charge is acutally more than the part itself so you definitely want to trade them in.

 

What year is your car? The dealership told me the exact same thing about my CV boots being dry rotted.

 

I would replace the axles entirely. If the boots are in bad condition, it is a possibility that the joints are probably on their last legs too. The axles are pretty cheap and relatively easy to replace yourself. It will be cheaper than $320 anyways and you get new axles.

You end up trashing an axle and maybe something worse....

 

i think at $50 an axle it's smarter to just replace the axle rather then replacing just the boot.

 

When you say axle do you mean the entire drive shaft? I have a CV boot torn open, been driving on it forever, gotta change the whole drive shaft pretty soon, and im looking at $200 for a drive shaft.
