I think you can use the word Drive shaft in place of CV axle or CV joint...
Full replacements is my theory. Parts that work together wear out together.

I was told the same by a mechanic $200-300... but i'm doing it myslf for $65, besides its a good excuse to bang on things and swear!

If your CV boots are torn, this can cause premature failure of the axle. Bad axles can cause vibration at certain speeds, and broken axles won't move the car period.
