I am looking at 97 R with 67,000 on it, but it is in poor shape. He is asking 10,500 for it.Any suggestions on price? NADA lists it at $9200 but you cannot factor in the shape of the car in that price. I don't believe it is worth more than $6500-$7500 if that. Here is a link to the posting on Honda-tech.com. Please let me know how much it is worth. Thanks.

That is the worst shape I've ever seen a type-r in (besides when i look in my backyard or type-r graveyard) plus the car doesn't run? You need to ask your self if you want the car because its the introductory, around 500 made, will be a collector and worth money someday. Or do you want a fast car. You can't really have both because if you want the first it kinda voids the second. But if you only want the second get something else. Either way thats probably to much money. I'd think he'd have to come down alot if he expects it to sell.

$10,500 is way too high.

Maybe $6-$7K as a track whore.

I don't think you can really assign a value to it. Most cars - even ITRs - are plentiful enough that you know what similar cars (similar year, mileage, and condition) are selling for. Unfortunately, this one is a one-of-a-kind - not in a good sense - and so you don't have a bunch of other beat-up, modded, non-operational '97 ITRs with 67K on them to compare it to.

Unless you have a lot of experience in body shop work, I wouldn't buy it...

if the motor hadn't been messed with so much, i'd consider it for 9.5k. however, that motor has some work done to it.

Thanks for the advice about this beast. He emailed me back and said the engine needed $1000 worth of work. I did make an offer, but it was half of what he wants for it. Has anyone ever bought a salvaged "R" and fixed it up? I was thinking of doing this, but have no idea where to look. Any suggestions?

Ebay and a little luck. There are, unfortunately, allot of type-r thefts. Fortunately some get recovered in one piece. Lots of used car places don't appreciate type-R’s quite like we at HAN do so they don't bother to rebuild them. I've seen a few on ebay and the last one I bought was from there. It cost me $1500 for the car and $950 to have it shipped from MA to CA. The car was stripped of EVERYTHING that was "type-r" on it, and I mean everything. Just be patient and the right deal will come along.
