I've had this happen to me in every car I've owned, normally in the winter time though. cloth or leather seats. I think some people are more prone to it than others

it happens to me pretty often too.... not every time i get out but i also have learned to close the door by glass

another thing i do when im wearing pants is put my foot on the ground, then touch metal with my leg (its almost like 2nd nature now...) since clothing is an insulator, it reduces the amt. of electricity that gets to your skin and you dont feel it as much

Spray some Static Guard on the seats. You can find it in supermarkets near the ironing supplies...It'll help...

This has been highly debated, but if you ever get a chance, try to watch the show Myth Busters (discovery channel?). They tested this one time by setting up the whole experiment IN AN ENCLOSED CHAMBER, and produced no fire what-so-ever. My 2 cents
Yes, but didn't the gas station attendent say that there were actually cases reported of it happening?

I couldn't remember if they were just talking about it or he said it actually happened.

Dont they make those keychains that is a model of a car, and when you touch the car, the car lights up and gets rid of the static electricity? where do they sell those things?

dude, this happens to me all the freekiong time, and I would love one of those model car staic-discharge things. Like ISP James, I just touch the doorframe with my leg now, it hurts less...

i usually hold the frame of the car as i get out, like the door sill, or something, and then you won't get shocked.. you could also get a rubber strap that slightly drags on the ground, attached to the frame of your car, that should prevent the static buildup in the firstplace.
