AEM CAI Loose Mid-range Hp?!
Okay, I have a GS-R but i ran across the forums on Superhonda.com and this is what one of the members said
"There was a dyno about an ITR and various intake systems. It was stock vs. aem cai vs. icebox vs. j'racing. The AEM actually lost power compared to the stock system. The reason why it seems to be faster on the butt dyno is because it loses quite a bit of mid-range and it peaks out in vtec but the peak horsepower was a tad bit below that of the stock ITR. The J's racing gained around 3whp and the comptech icebox gained 4-5whp at peak but the mid-range was much improved."
I'm really in a dilema.. thas prolly why Japanese dont use/like CAI/Shortram intake systems.
Also, who makes aftermarket filters that are acessable to people like me? Thanks

The J's Racing intake did show definite gains, but, of course, it's fairly expensive and some people won't buy it just because it's weird looking and costs so much.
A number of us have settled on the Comptech Icebox as the good compromise solution.
A short tube intake can get you extra horses on an ITR motor, as Dave Stadulis and Steve Sakai were also able to prove on my ITR. However, they have never put together any kind of marketing plan for the intake they tested on my car, and evidently do not intend to sell it.
You've already said you were talking about a GS-R, not an ITR, and I just want to remind you of that.
The OEM intake system on an ITR is different from the OEM intake system on the GS-R. The fact that the AEM is not the best choice for the B18C5 ITR motor does not necessarily mean you can equate that experience to the B18C1 USDM GS-R motor.
In fact, to this day, you will find die-hard GS-R AEM owners who say their cars improve 10 or more Dynojet HP when using the AEM, compared to a run on the same day using their OEM intakes.
When it comes to intakes, the ITR and GS-R are just too different for an ITR owner's decision to have an effect on the GS-R owner's decision.

If you want noise and some top end power - AEM.
If you want a cool looking intake that doesn't lose any midrange but doesn't gain as much top end as the AEM (and isn't as loud, has decent gains) - J's.
If you want a good all around intake - Comptech Icebox.
If you want the BEST intake - Mugen.
*Best = non-custom intake that the general public can buy.
Y'all have to remember - its best to tune when you change i/h/e and especially internals. The ecu doesn't just adapt to the best possible output when you add bolt ons.

I can't speak for how they work on a GS-R, probably similary, but I cannot be sure. Sakai's dynos were on an ITR also - probably somewhat helpful, but I figure we can share info about how ITR intakes perform in ITRs, since this is the ITR forum :P

I'm sure the Mugen works fine on a GS-R, just as an ITR. The difference bwt. the two motors w/regard to an intake isn't THAT big...it's a freakin' intake that we're talking about. It's basic physics...tube diam, length, filter flow, etc.
I stand by my post above...all the info you need is there. Educate yourself, then purchase.

Your link sends us to a site that requires education, and I'd bet that most of us aren't going to register to read the article.
