I got my car with 20000 and wanted to go to syn but I have
herd on here that some cars have started to use more oil when they switched. I have also herd stories about seepage through gaskets as well
anyone herd or experienced any of these negatives? if these are old wives tales, then I would like to start using synthetic. any infor is greatly appriciated!

Yes, it's an old wive's tale....people who say that synthetic oil causes leaks are people with bad seals....bad seals cause leaks, not synthetic oil...

And it won't use any more oil....burned oil is caused by blow by...which is caused by the piston rings not totally sealing correctly which could be a number of things....

I've heard of brand new (read: under 30k) ITR's burning oil...dunno why but they do...I think a lot of it goes back to properly breaking in an engine...most people don't do it correctly, if at all.

The previous owner of my 2000 ITR, broke in the engine and then used Amsoil and changed it before the 3,000 mile interval...the result? My R burns absolutely no oil....many people say it's because I don't drive it had enough...blegh.

With that said, every engine will burn SOME oil....most times it's not even noticeable...it's when it starts going down on the dipstick that you have problems IMO.

So yes, switch to synthetic oil....my recommendations? Mobil 1 is the best bang for you buck at wallyworld...it's the best oil you can get there too...stay away from Castrol Syntec...it's not even a synthetic oil....

If you want to go the extra mile, get Amsoil or Redline....extremely good oils. I'm currently running Amsoil in my ITR with 24k on it...*sigh* My car has been at 24k for 3 months now....winter storage sucks.

Anyway good luck with the oil. The R deserves synthetic!!!

Most people that Ive heard of that burn synth oil in their ITRs use Mobil 1 5w30. Not sure why but there are sooo many stories.

I use Amsoil 5w30 in mine and have had no oil consumption problems at all, even on track etc.

There is no real consensus on how to properly break in your car. Just cross your fingers with whatever method you choose.

I went from regular to synthetic right when I hit 10k miles. After 15k miles of synthetic, back to good ole Castrol GTX 10w30.

I dopped in some Mobil 1 around 20K miles, no leaks or burning as of yet.
