I have a 2000 ITR with just under 50K miles that I have 99% of maintenance done at the local Acura Dealership. The last few days the car has been acting a funny. When i'm in the correct gear, driving at a constant speed and when I step on the gas the car Revs up an extra 2000RPM before the car begins to accelerate. It is basically lagging when I hit the gas, its similar to being in the wrong gear and trying to accelerate (i.e. going 30MPH in 4th gear and stepping on the gas), but it happens when I'm in the correct gear. It has happened when I'm in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. I'm taking it in to the Acura dealership next Tuesday. Anybody experience this before or have heard of something similar. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

 

Your clutch is slipping.

When we took my OEM clutch out at something like 70K miles, it still had life in it.

It sounds like yours might have gone quite a bit sooner.

I doubt you abuse your clutch though.

My first inclination was to say his clutch was slipping, but then I saw the mileage and figured I'd let one of you blokes answer it.

Is it possible it could be a problem with the differential as well, guys? I don't know much about limited slip differentials, unfortunately.

 

The ITR Torsen axle can handle at lot more than 200 crank HP.

Unless he's been doing some serious abusing, somehow, I kind of doubt it.

 

Engaging first gear in my car, sometimes I have that 'over rev' thing that was explained in the first post. It rarely happens, and didn't happen until after my 3 track events in 8 days. I only have 32,000, and the clutch is rock solid everywhere else except 5% of the time engaging 1st gear from a stop, so I'm not concerned at all yet. But, what you described sounds common for a slipping clutch.

 

Thanks for the info, I don't abuse my clutch very often its very rare that I will. I never took the car to the track or qtr, but the person I bought it from, it had only 13,000 miles on it, took it a few times. The clutch is not under any type of warranty is it? If it's going out at under 50K with rarely any abuse, and others are getting up to 70K with somewhat similar abuse, is my clutch going out sooner than most others? What is the cost to replace the clutch, stock, from the dealer and from other shops. The Acura Dealership quoted me $800. I might see how much the Honda dealerships will charge. Is there anything you guys feel I should look out for or be cautious with when I have my clutch changed? Thanks again for the info, and this licks balls if I need to change the clutch out because I just bought a house to put my R in.

get a good stage 1 clutch of any after market brand (excedy, Clutchmaster, ACT) and get it installed at some local shop for half their price quote.
