Humming noise at high speeds

Humming noise at high speeds
I have a loud humming noise at 40 mph and above. It doesnt seem to be coming from the engine compartment but rather the rear wheels or axle. Also there is an inordinate amount of black stuff on one of my rear wheels, there is road construction down the street and I assumed that it was just tar but now am unsure. Can anyone help?

It seems that your rear tires could be cupped causing a humming noise.Try running your hands up and down the tread and see if you have high and low spots also a flat spot would cause this too. Also the hub and bearing if they go bad will produce the same noise which is evident more with speed. Hope this helps you out Steve 97tl

Hello. I just picked up a '94 GSR. I noticed this type of problem as well, but for me, it would happen starting at around 20-25, and I would hear it in the front rather than the rear. Then, it would get higher pitched as I'd pick up speed. But then, it goes away on the freeway when my foot's on the gas and come back when I release the gas (to brake or exit). Does this sound like the wheel bearing as well? That was my first guess, but I wanted to ask others first.
BTW, this is my first post here and my first Honda/Acura. I avoided them before because they're mostly FWD--started out driving a '91 Corolla then got a '95 525i. Loved the Bimmer, but my aunt was selling the Teg. Bone stock, driven casually (until now!), 84K miles for 5K. She kept the inside real clean too. I never listened when my friends would talk about the car ... German car arrogance, I guess. But, I'm amazed at what it can do. It's torqueyer then I thought. I entered the freeway here in 2nd gear. I'm still trying to take that car up to redline, but I hit 70 in 2nd gear! The double wishbone's awesome. I'm taking her to her first auto-x this Saturday. Any tips? I'm thinking of not modding it out until I learn her limits with stock components ... but I'm getting really tempted.

Thanks! Yeah, the tires it came with are pretty decent. Toyo Proxes F4Z. She just replaced them not too long ago. When the time comes--after a few more autocrosses and possibly a track day--I'll either get some Kumho Ecstas or Falken Azenis, Bridgestones if I decide to splurge. Before then, I was thinking of some coilovers and sway bars. I saw pics of Integras in auto-x. There was quite a bit more roll than I would like.
