Default Tapping Noise

I over reved my the motor last week and my Vafc said it hit 9973RPMs. The car still seems to run great and idle is fine. I dynoed it last week and didnt see any kind of loss of power and the air/fuel is running perfect. The car doesnt smoke either but the only thing is that its making a soft tapping noise now. How much damage do u think im looking at?, Im going to take it to the shop monday but I was just curious to know if i was going to be looking a big problem. You think a vavle adjustment is in order?.

I definitely think a valve adjustment is first on your list. What engine are you running? Any aftermarket parts in your head assembly that could sustain a 9000+RPM spike? If not, and you're running stock head on a B-series, you may be looking at some tapping valves, if not more. Open her up and take a look!

i wouldnt even know what to look for if i opend the head. I will just take it to my mechanic this week. I would just guess that whatever the problem is cant be as servere since the car is still running fine and the dyno last week showed nothing unusual.

Im having that same problem with my 91 RS. Is it normal if the valves need adjusting for the Check Engine light to come on? Cause mine is.

You are probably just suffering from a normal old Honda valvetrain ticking. You can adjust the valves if you like, but it may still tick. Again, that's normal for the car's age.

The check engine light is a different problem. Dig out the ECU and read the code from the blinking LED on the top, and that will tell you the problem.

Theoretically, if your valves were really, really out of spec they could be loud enough to give the knock sensor a heart attack... but that would be rather extreme.

EDIT: The 1991 RS was equipped with a knock-sensor?? h: Wow..

For the valvetrain to be that far out of whack, the car would most likely have a very rough, unstable and loping idle. As mentioned before, the ECU code will illuminate the specific problem.

The '91 RS does not have a knock sensor, so it's not that.

Do you know the general area where the noise is coming from?
