Default 5th gear grind at high RPMs

If I'm traveling at 75mph and drop it down to 4th gear and then into 5th I get this annoying grind when I'm pushing from 4th gear into 5th gear. It does not happen at lower RPMs, only at higher RPMs.

What's going on here? I have a 1998 GS-R with 50K miles.

Thanks.

You or whoever learned how to drive a stick on your car messed up the snychros a bit all i know is that at 50k miles, your 5th gear syncrhos shouldnt be worn unless you suck at driving

I remember the previous owner telling me his g/f learned how to drive stick on the car he sold me (GS-R). Nice. The throw out bearing was making a good bit of noise shortly after I purchased the car. Brake grease stopped that. I assume this is related?

So what needs to be done and how much am I looking at?

Like I said, it only happens on high RPM gear changes from 4th to 5th.

That means you either have to take the tranny to a shop and have the synchros replaced (or you could learn to do it yourself, but I would not recommend it if you have never worked on a tranny before). Or you can just find another tranny. :a:

If you take it to a shop it could be from $500 -$1500 depending on what they need to replace. If you do it your self the synchros are about $200 a peice from the dealer. I do all of my own tranny work so I just replace them myself but like I said I would not recommend doing it if its your first time going in a tranny.
