exhaust descisions

He wants to be annoying because that's what four-cylinder race cars sound like.
News flash, you're not driving in a race on your way to work. A canister-style muffler like the N1 is not going to produce any gain in performance over a quieter aftermarket exhaust. It will produce a gain in noise, that is all. A little four banger is never going to sound like a big V8 no matter what kind of muffler you put on it so don't worry.
ANYWAY back to exhaust recommendations instead of all of this stupid postulating, here goes.
I prefer a system that is full stainless steel. It lasts longer and looks better. The N1 uses a stainless muffler and mild steel pipes. So even if it wasn't overly loud (which I think it is) and produced a bunch more power than other exhausts (which it doesn't) I still wouldn't buy it.
Basically there are two reasonably-priced exhausts that I would look at: the RS*R Exmag and the Tanabe Super Hyper Medalion (not to be confused with the Super Racing Medalion which uses a canister-style muffler). Both are fully stainless. The Exmag has an exposed stainless tip and the rest is painted flat black. It looks and sounds only a bit more aggressive than stock. The SHM is fully polished. It's nice and shiny without looking like a canteloupe cannon and it produces a bit more aggressive of a sound than the Exmag without being overly annoying like a canister-style muffler.
Basically I'm saying that you shouldn't turn your car into yet another too-loud Honda and instead get a more tasteful exhaust.

It might change next week when I put on my ITR header an carsound cat I know I will be bottlenecking but it will be ok with me

Mrfatbooty,
I am trying to weigh the differences between the greddy evo and the tannabe super hyper medallion...
what is the difference in sound between the two? both seem to be very good performers, and I really don't want anything too loud at all.
I will be replacing my header and cat soon after.
thanks for any input
(also, the greddy evo isn't stainless... the evo2 doesn't seem to be available here yet... maybe it's just the looks of the evo and I do like the sound that are making me lean towards it... I haven't heard the tannabe but if it is even less aggressive sounding and performs as well I would be all over it)

I think the GReddy Evo looks stupid and I wouldn't buy anything that doesn't have stainless pipes. That's traditionally one of the main reasons people upgrade their exhaust which for some reason has been lost on the current generation of people buying the things. Mild steel is the same crap as stock.

RS*R is a great exhaust system. Unlike MrFatBooty, I prefer the look of the black muffler/piping with only the tip being polished over the Tanabe's fully-polished look. But to each his own.
At first, you will notice ZERO difference. After about 3 weeks, however, the system is broken in a bit and has just a perfect idle sound and only a pinch deeper than stock at all levels, unless you are full throttle at which point it gets a bit "rumbley".
You can not go wrong with RS*R. 480 dollars shipped, driftspeed.com. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.
Good luck.
(by the way, I love the new look/interface of the forums! Been a while since I've been on, school and such, but it's looking great! )
