Exhaust Ticket!!!! Need Advice!!!!
hey guys, i got a 95 integra LS, with a catback n1-exhaust. I just got pulled over today and was ticketed for it entitled "Inadaquate Exhaust". So, i dont really knw what the laws are in New York state about it, but my freinds were tellin me that it has nothing to do with the noise, and if my exhaust is complete "Inadaquate" and working which it is, then i should go to court and fight it. Does anyone have any information abuot this to help my case?? Much help needed, thanks

You could go to court and fight that citation.
Maybe he did give you a ticket for having a loud muffler. Perhaps the officer thought, your muffler is loud due to being old and worn, b/c if you have an hole in a muffler, it gets loud.
But you should go to court and fight the ticket.
GOod luck.

If only you were in California... dang.
We recently passed a revision to the Vehicle Code that allows a ticket like yours to be contested with an actual test to verify that the exhaust is in compliance with our 95dB (A) limit.
The SEMA lobby was instrumental in the passage of this bill, and when I checked up on their website a few months ago - as part of an assignment - SEMA had indicated that they were now pushing to implement a similar process of revision in New York State...
To make a short story long... I'd fire off an email to SEMA, or at least check up on their site... >>SEMA Website<<
Perhaps they can offer some advice.

hum norcal dc4 i'm located in cali as well, and as you know cops here are dicks, and emission laws are strick. anyways i recently got a ticket for "modified exhaust" and yes i was planning on fighting it in court, here's the deal though, i have not so called "modified" my exhaust, since it isn't even the stock one, i thought modified means that you had done something to your original set up, i.e. poke a hole in it or something, i have a whole replacement greddy cat-back exhaust, unfortunately i don't have the papers showing that it's street legal. do you happen to know the exact vehicle code that was just passed, i'd really appreciate it, any advice would help out a lot, thanks in advance.

1) Outlines the changes to CVC 27150 & CVC 27151
1a) Which legally define an aftermarket exhaust system as "modified" BTW.
2) The process by which a ticketed motorist proceeds with a exhaust noise test to verify whether or not the exhaust system - as installed on YOUR vehicle- is indeed compliant with the 95dBA limit.
3) Also has related links to the CHP website and the pertinent bulletins that have been issued to field offices.

Greddy does a good job of testing their equipment..so you should be able to pass the test and have the ticket dismissed in court without problems.
The law - for once - has finally been written fairly and concisely.
Good Luck and God Speed.

You should also note, exhaust (cat-back) modification does not effect emissions what so ever.
In most cases, the law is placed to prevent NOISE pollution. A muffler does nothing to fix emissions, your catalytic convertor is your last line of defense for that. A muffler is merely there to "muffle" the sound of the engine. Hence, the 95DB law that is in effect in California.
Don't worry guys, you'll have one of those "asshole cops" on your side shortly here. *wink*

unfortunately the N1 does exceed the 95 db limit...but you may get off on a technicality in the fact that he didn't actually say it violated a noice ordinance, but just that it was inadequate. Good luck.

edit: i forgot that i was trying to say that cops a ghey... and even though it's certified, they'll try to do anything to give u a ticket. i think the certificate just makes them more mad cuz it's harder for them to reach their quota.

:squint: Okay... that's it!...
It's really unfortunate that some people have had bad experiences with law enforcement, pertaining to aftermarket exhaust systems, and other elements of car mods that have poorly written laws. I've been fairly fortunate as of late, but I can empathize with those of you who have not.
That said, this myth that cops aren't allowed to tell you to open your hood is one-hundred percent FALSE. Even a cursory read of the CA vehicle code will immediately expose this rediculous fallacy.
And while I'm at it... I'm putting my foot down on the issue of threads and posts that only perpetuate the age-old gripes of ticket quotas and such. This is an automotive forum, not a bitch-fest. If all you want to contribute is "f**k cops!" , then find somewhere else to do it.
