Default True or False - Brake Pads (asbestos) causing brake squeak?

Recently I brought my car into the dealership and they would not pass my car for PA Inspection unless I had new, rear brake pads and machine my rotors.

It's been two weeks now and this annoying, light squeak is coming from the rear brakes when I lightly apply the brakes. When I bear down hard on them, it stops. The longer I drive (and the warmer my brakes get), the worse it becomes. This problem did NOT occur prior to the Acura dealership touching my car.

I phoned the dealer and I'm going in for my 3rd appointment this Saturday. The Acura service manager believes the cause of the squeak is that in 1998 they used asbestos brake pads, and in 2000 they now use non-asbestos brake pads that have a tendancy to squeak. Is this true? Or does this sound like a load of bull to you?

Like I said, this is the third time I've been back to the Acura dealership, and I'm about ready to contact Acura and the owner of the dealership about this problem since it wasn't happening prior to them servicing my vehicle. What do you fine folks recommend? Thoughts greatly appreciated.

My question is, were your rear brake pads installed correctly? The cross hatch on the piston must fit directly over two tabs that are on the pad backing. Failure to align them just right will result in the pads setting at an angle. The severe angle will wear away one side more quickly, resulting in the squealer (metal tab) or backing contact with the rotor.

asbestos doesn't cause brake squealing. they ended asbestos brakes when they learned that asbestos is a carcinogen (cancer causing).

its definitely faulty installation.

Good call. Like I said, I've printed out drumsy's comments and I'm handing them over to the service manager Saturday. If that doesn't fix it, I'm threatening to contact the owner of the dealership who happens to be tight with my girlfriends family. And from my understanding, this guy is a real ball breaker.

what the dealer said also makes sense... on 1st revision 1st generation Neon's they used a brake pad for the rear that squeals unbearably until it heats up... but in '98 they changed it... unfortunately, my mom has a '97 and it's loud as fawk!
