Default Which gear do you leave your car in?

When I drive, I usually shift all the way up to 5th gear, usually when I am between 40-50 MPH, and I just leave it there unless I have to downshift. What gear(s) do you guys leave it in?

Also, which gears at which speed should you shift at or leave in to get the best gas mileage?

It's weird. I'd probably end up in 8th gear if I had one. It's just natural to keep going up thru the gears. Here on the East Coast's Piedmont plateau, there are all these hills/valleys/twistie bits. Whenever I'm doing those bits & trying to get somewhere, I always catch myself & say "what the hell are you doing in fifth???
Keeping the revs at about 2750 is just into my powerband. I can grab some torque from there.
ps: aphex- that's a great trike video. notice how the little guy gets a powerslide by backin' off the power?? Start 'em young!!

it totally depends on the situation and what kind of road I am on. If I am on a back road that has hills and turns, I leave it in 4th so I can downshift to 3rd if I need to. 5th isn't good if you need to either slow down or ned more power to go up hills. If I am on a highway then I am usually in 5th at that speed.

5th gear is only for the highway, or for long drives on roads where you can do 50+ mph and not stop very much.

im in 5th gear from 30mph on unless I am accelerating. I like to keep the RPMs lower than 2k at those speeds. less work for the engine means less wear and tear and better gas mileage. I also rarely shift past 4k anyway....no reason to in an LS really if ur not in a hurry.
