Default B16B...how good is it?

Well Mr. KangaRod...I must say that are are correct when you say that the B18c1 has 20 more ft. lbs. of torque, yet you are inncorrect when you say that the B16b only has 4 more horsepower. It actually has 20 more horsepower making the B16b more powerful over the B18c1 you are bragging about. And if someone were to know how to shop, like sdcaro01, you can get a great deal on a CTR. Do you have the B18c1???

Default B16B...how good is it?

To my surprise, I have discovered that even some of my facts are slightly incorrect. The US version of that engine has 16 lbs more torque, not 20 like you said... and the B16b has 15 more horsepower, not 20...which is still more than 4 which you had previoulsy stated earlier. The Japanese Version of the B18c1 is different. I just found a great website that has all the facts. Heres the link:

B18c is going to be a better choice all around b/c you have a displacement advantage to begin with, a cost advantage and an overall potential power advantage with bolt ons.

So what you're trying to say is that the B18c (Japanese version) is a better choice than both the B16b and the B18c1 (US Version)?? I believe that the Japanese version is better than the US version, yet it is no way better than the type R B16b...here are a few of the B series engine specs...
B16b has better output power than both the B18c and the B18c1
B16b has 185ps/ 8200rpm while b18c only has 180/7600 and B18c1 only has 170/7600...

The compression ratio of the B16b is 10.8:1
the B18c has 10.6:1
the B18c1 has 10.0:1

The B16b has torque up to 7600 rpm while B18c has it up to 6200rpm and B18c1 has it up to 7300rpm.

B16b also has a weight advantage over these other two engines. It weighs less, and hence anything to make your car lighter, is better. You think just because the engine block is bigger, that its better. Its not the size of your engine, it's how you use it. Although the B18c and the B18c1 will be better in the long run if you race constantly, the B16b will still smoke your ass while you're blabbing to your buddy that you have a displacement advantage...

I think we are comparing apples to oranges here... What I'm trying to say is any B18c version engine is going to be better IN THE LONG RUN than a B16b b/c of the reasons I just stated. I'm not talking about a pos B20z or anything else that will self destruct when you rev it past 6500 rpm, I'm refering to engines with the same RPM capability - Yes, in stock form the type R b16 has more PEAK hp and PEAK torque than a USDM or JDM non type R B18c, BUT will not have as much POWER POTENTIAL overall or the powerband as the larger displacement B18c engines do. One other thing to keep in mind is the smog certification factor - you will be hard pressed to get a B16b to pass the sniffer test since it's built for all out top end power and has very high compression, and very agressive fuel and timing maps to go with it, but it's no problem to get a USDM B18c to pass and only sacrifice a mere 5 hp while you're at it. Even if you slightly mod a non type R B18c, it will put down more power/torque than a stock B16b that is already almost maxxed out from the factory. As far as a weight advantage, you are talking at the most 40 or so pounds - which is well outjustified by the larger displacement of B18c engines. The bottom line is type R engines are incredible works of art considering they are a stock factory built engine, but they are very expensive and hard to come by, so if someone asks me what engine is a good choice for a civic swap all around, I would always go for a B18b for a turbo or a B18c1 for NA - in the end you can get more power out of them b/c THEY HAVE MORE DISPLACEMENT!
