Default Help with choosing a cam

I have a 99 civic with the d16y7. I was wondering if I could use a cam from another Honda. Want to gain some performance or just look in to aftermarket cam for my car. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The cams from the D16z and D16Y are interchangable if you have a buddy with one you want to try out.

I have a customer running a Crower 63441 in a D16Y and with some mild porting and 11:1 comp and he picked up over .4 in the 1/8 mile with the tires spinning over his stock runs. Uses the stock ECU and idles like a baby.

The D16Z6 is SOHC VTEC. The D16Y7 is not. I don't think he'd be able to use a VTEC cam in a non-VTEC head. There are plenty of choices for the SOHC non-VTEC applications, but I don't see how they could be interchanged with the SOHC VTEC ones.

According to the Crower Catalog on pg 79 they say that "although engines (D16Z and D16Y) have different designations, camshafts are similar and can be interchanged between the two cylinder heads."

Are you thinking about the D16A6 not being compatable?

The D16Z6 and D16Y8 are both SOHC VTEC engines,a nd I would expect their cams to be interchanable. The D16Y7, however, is the 96-00 CX/DX/LX SOHC non-VTEC engine, and I wouldn't think a VTEC cam would work in a non-VTEC head, what with the extra lobes and all.

it seems to me a vtec cam would still work in a non-vtec engine. just not vice versa, seeing as it would be missing the vtec lobes.
