Learned today that you can get the headlight apart much easier and faster by putting the headlight in the oven for 325 deg. for 2 min 45 sec.

I am going to be doing this, this weekend and I have a few questions?

If it runs easily couldn't you sand the chrome a little bit so the paint will stick easier? or will there be sanding marks?

Would putting in the oven for 2 min 45 sec. also apply to putting the headlight back together?

I'd just rub off the reflective part when using the alcohol and a rag, that worked well on the other sets I did. I wouldn't sand on the plastic with too high of a grit because you will see the scratches. I don't see a need to sand them at all as long as you use thin coats. That's a better painting method anyway. ;)

As for the time in the oven, it's really a variable thing... you really just need to try it and see what works for your oven. Do a shorter amount of time first so you don't risk melting the housing. You can always put it back in if you didn't leave it in long enough, but you can't really 'unmelt' a headlight if you leave it in too long. :oh:

Good luck man! Let us know how it turns out. :D

When you say rub off the reflective part are you talking about rubbing it completly off or just a little bit?

Will a hair dryer work fine? I don't think I have a heat gun.

What happens if I accidently make paint run? What would I do about getting the paint off?

How long do you think I should leave it in for at first?

After the headlight is reassembled and I go to put it in the oven how long should I leave it in there for?

Is this the right paint? This is the only kind of Dupli-color Gunmetal paint I could find.

I got around to painting my headlights but I am having trouble getting the headlights back together completely. I heated up to silicone and put it in the oven but it still has not completly sealed back together. I even rapped the headlight in a towel and duct taped it together but that did not really help. What could the problem be?
