PM member jaymar88. I believe he spent a whole day polishing his valve cover...lol. I think you have to strip the paint first before hitting the sandpaper. Get a can of aircraft paint stripper and remove the paint first.

Hey I'm interested also....Also can anyone post pics of a valve cover thats done in the same process im not talking about the polished valve covers you buy.....I'm talking about those who done it themselves.
Also what about the rust problems, what have you guys done?

aircraft stripper is what you are gonna need to get the black shit off the valve cover at first,..spray the aircraft stripper on there and let it sit for like 15 mins to eat away at the black shit,..do this until all the shit is completely off the valve cover,.until you have it down to bare metal,...now i apologize that i dont know the specific grits of sandpapers because i did this a long time ago,..but you do start with a rougher grit,..and then gradually the grit gets finer,..and yes you do wetsand,...after you have sanded the bastard down till it starts to somewhat shine,..you will need a polishing agent to get it to somewhat "bling",..i used eagle one polishing,...just a warning though,..after finishing the valve cover,..you will hate sanding forevAr :chuckles: ,...i was pretty much day long process for my valve cover

If you have access to a air compressor: Remove the paint by stripper or sandblasting with a light media. Get a die grinder and some polishing wheels and start to polish lightly. Be careful here as you can remocve metal and create uneven surface. Polich out by hand or with an orbital sander with a polishing pad. Much faster than by hand but be careful.

I have done a couple of valve covers for myself as well as friends, I use a light media in the blast cabinet, then different types of polishing compounds, I start w/ the black stuff, then brown and finally white, took me all day, but it looks good.
if you don't mind spending $$, it is about a hundred and fifty bucks to have it chromed..
And for those of you that have powder coated covers, try the stripeeze from your local home depot, it worked for me, just soaked the valve cover in the crap for about 3 hours...paint peeled right off, but beware of the fumes...
