rear shox replacement 91CRX
Hi, anybody any advice on the procedure for changing the rear struts,
I have looked at the Haynes maintenance manuel and there procedure seems to straight forward to be true . for the 88-91 year there is no mention of needing a spring compressor for the rear shocks or even a jacking procedure,
Cheers stevet

Well Haynes and Chiltons aren't very thourough.
I have never done this before but from looking at it I would say you would need to...
Jack up the car, and put jackstands under it. Take off the wheels. Compress the spring. Unbolt the strut from the top, unbolt the strut from the bottom. Lift out the strut and slowly decompress spring. Now that all the parts are there go replace them.

youre going to need a spring compressor.
and youre going to need a serious amount of time to free the backs. you might save yourself the trouble and have a bolt driller on hand and fresh rear bolts...i snapped a few off on a 1995, i cant imagine what my 1990 is going to be like.

This is not a hard project to do actually.
I will agree that a new pair of bolts is in order. Be sure to use a lot of Power BLaster, Liquid Wrench or WD40 on the bolts before starting. Rent a spring compressor or find a shop that will do the transfer-more fun doing it yourself tho. Jack up each side and put the car on stands. Remove the (2) retaining nuts for the upper hats-DO NOT remove the big shock nut yet. If you have an impact wrench use it to get the old bolt out of the bottom. It is a simple matter to remove the shock from there and clamp it in a vise and use the spring compressor to transfer the parts to the new shock.
Whatever you do-use a torque wrench to finish tighten all of the nuts. The upper ones should be at 28 foot pounds.
The bolt should also be torqued to 40 foot pounds.
