vtec......good or bad?

don't contradict yourself......you don't have money for b16 and you don't want ZC, but you want 150whp........the d16z6 has alot of mods for it considering its a sohc vtec....there is a guy on HAN with a 99 EX not d16z6 but close and he is pushing 9.19@79.94 1/8 mile, 14.1 @99.05 1/4 on 8psi untuned
8 psi tuned 176 whp/173 torque on SOHC VTEC.

nitrous is considered forced induction
A zc will not yeild 200hp n/a in streetable form. Even with the bottle, its a stretch. I dont know much about nitrous, but I'd think that you would need to beef up your internals for that much nitrous. If you want 200 hp n/a, maybe even the b16 is not enough. I'd recommend at least a b18c, a b18c5 or a built b20.
May I ask what is your budget? It sounds like the b16 is somewhat pricey for you. 200 hp n/a will really milk your pockets.

He said his budget is $3200 before. His main problem is if he gets B16A he will not have enough money to tune it since he is not installing it himself it will cost too much. If he gets ZC then he would have to build it up to be able to handle the nitrous and that would probably cost to much. Something like that.

15, man I'm 20 and I'm just getting my car to scoot. I'm on my 3rd civic, 87 4dr, 91 4dr, 89 hatch (current). Just realize it takes time to build a 200 whp streetable car. I've been working on mine for 2 years and the money and time will definately add up. Just take it slow, you don't need to beat everyone right away, plus you're are still gonna need to learn to drive it.
yeah I know, you're already a great driver, right? Wrong, it takes a lot of experience to push a car to its limits, and that's what you'll need to do to win.
If you want more speed, weight reduction also works wonders, in a car as light as ours, if you shave off another 100 lbs, you'll definately be faster, just remember where it comes from, the balance of our car isn't great and needs to be dealt with...
Go get a job before you worry about what to buy, then research around, find the right prices, the right mods, reputable shops, and by the time you are satisfied with all your finds, you'll have more to spend...

ive had a b16 they are fun engines but over priced, zc's are cheap and with the extra money u can do plenty of extra mods with that extra cash, the b16 is a stronger platform to work from but only if u have the cash flow to back it up with the work and attention itd need.

vtec is good but primarily it was implimented to improve gas mileage, not necessarily performance, with a similarly ground camshaft on the same sized engine with the same compression rating u will get the approximately the same hp ratings, but u will loose gas mileage because vtec engagement doesnt kick in unless ur ecu notices ur want for the power or the rpms for it, vtec is simply the same as having 2 camshafts one for low rpm operation under normal driving conditions (gas saving mode) and 1 for all out power (gas guzzling mode) all in 1. both the zc and b16 are great platforms in a rex due to its low curb weight.
