Yeah, but the tranny would have a big hole where the driveshaft would be, right? Wouldn't that make it leak oil, like when you pull an axle? That's not the way I want to drive down the highway.

I think the driveshaft bolts to a flange on the tranny. So you would have a spinning thing, not a hole.
