the 8th digit in should be between 1-7. Here's how the list goes:
1-Basic, HF
2-Standard, DX
3-GL, GLS, LX
4-Lxi, Si
5-DX (CRX)
6-Si or HF (CRX)
7-Accord Hatchback & Lxi
I'm 99% sure it's the 8th digit.

Look at your VIN.....look for the 8th digit....that digit should be a #. Now, look at the list above. The first list is 1983-1989 Hondas and the second is 1990-1993. Go down whichever list your car year falls under. Find the # and that should tell you what trim level it is.
Does it make more sense?! I guess I thought it was rather self-explanatory before.

it is, but if you look your list defines an 90-91 crx with the same code, be it HF or SI. this is my primary interest, looking at advertisements where the trim level isn't listed and being able to tell. see below:
6-HFCRX
6-Si CRX
6-HFCRX
6-Si CRX

I'm not sure if this will work for the 90-91's, but if you see whats listed below on your vin, it'll help to distingiush between HF and SI.
ED8-1500 CRX (which is the 1.5L)
ED9-1600 CRX (which is the 1.6L)
ED8-1500 CRX (which is the 1.5L)
ED9-1600 CRX (which is the 1.6L)
