Coolant burns white.
Sputtering means there is moisture or water in cylinder...
Best bet is headgasket is done for.

Depends on how long the gasket holds and how much coolant you're loosing.
It would be cheaper to have the gasket done now before you overheat or blow the entire motor.
My son drove his for a couple of weeks with a leaky radiator. Then the car overheated and the gasket failed. He needed a tow home. It was winter time and very cold, so I just replaced the radiator, head gasket, intake gasket and exhaust gasket. Only took me a couple hours. Although I had just replaced everything else a year before (timing belt, water pump etc) so I knew that stuff was good.
Is there a reason you are trying to hold out for a couple months? New swap, new car maybe??

Did they do a pressure test on the cooling system and a compression test? As long as you told them white smoke from the exhaust, they are complete idiots if they didn't.
I could figure that one out even if I wasn't Master certified...lol.

hey i have a question my friends car is smoking... he when to the shop and they told him that blue smoke was comming out because something was wrong with the valve and they needed to replace the valves...so do you think thats the problem......or he has bad piston rings....

The Valves...
If a valve leaks that means oil can get into the cylinder from above through the head, if its the rings it gets past from the piston... So if they say he has a bad valve its probably the valve seat (seal?) I believe, should be a lot cheaper than replacing the rings, as its a hellav lot more accessible.
