Default Suspension on 2nd Gen CRX

I need some help settling an argument (heated debate) with a friend...

It's my understanding that on the 2nd Gen CRX/Civics they redesigned the suspension for 89-91.

I'm pretty sure there's some difference from 88 to 91 'cause a friend of mine couldn't fit the same 17" rims on an 88 that he had on his '91.

My reasoning follows parts catalouges; when you shop for suspension components it's either '88 or '89-'91.

My buddy is saying that the redesign is only for the 91 year model, and all the 2nd gen's before 91 are the same.

Who's right?

Maybe we're both wrong.... This came up because I'm on the market for a 2nd gen rolling chassis and I want the newest suspension setup I can get on the CRX.

Thanks in advance,
Russell

Its 89-91...

The difference is the rear lower control arms...

See this diagram:

The lower control arms on the 88s are 18 and 21, they have a hole on the top of them where the strut goes thru, and the bushing is on the strut itself... The 89-91s have the illustration shown as 19,22... Where the bottom of the rear struts has a fork that slides down over the LCA and bolts thru the bushing on the LCA...

I dont doubt theres other slight differences aswell... But this is the main reason why the different suspensions are sold for the different years... And the LCA can be swapped over... So if you want to run 89-91 susp, just get the 89-91 LCAs... But becareful, some of the JDM companies (notably TEIN) make their setups for the JDM models... And im not all too sure which way they lean... I *think* they may have the 88 model arms... But I cant be sure...

As for the 17" issue, this wouldnt effect it... There may have just been saggy springs... IMHO 17" is way to big for a CRX anyways...

you are correct. tiens makes them for the 88 model, as well for the 89-91(US market tiens). MOST of our JDM counter parts still use the 88 style lca(similar to the ITR). if you get the Super Streets you need the ITR/88CRX lca's. Well at least i needed them when i had my del sol....
