89 DX 5-speed Tranny into 91 DX
Will the 89 5-speed DX tranny work without mods in a 91 DX? I seem to remember there were some problems with 88 or 89 transmissions & clutches not working with later years, anyone know?
thanks in advance

i believe its only the 88's that are different from the 89-91's but pretty much any tranny from a d motor will mount up to any other d motor except the teg d motor... im just going by what i was told when i asked this same question.

88 have a different spline count (cant rem if its 20 or 21 its one and the later models are the other) from the 89s and up... They also have a smaller surface area... The 89s share the small suface area with the 88s, but otherwise it will work... And the surface area depends on the flywheel anyways... Since u already have a 91, it shouldnt matter... Id replace the clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced anyways tho...

Thanks for the input, I had a new clutch and new flywheel put in a couple of months ago so I'm hoping to be able to still use them. The problem I still have is the noise from one or more worn out bearings (real noisy when in neutral and clutch out). So I'm trying to find a replacement tranny to put in.

For some strange reason, 88 clutches are different from 89s, and 89 clutches are also different from the 90-91 clutches, but 90-91s are the same.
I don't think the spline count from 89-91s are different, but I do know for sure that the surface areas of the clutch and flywheel are different from actual experience. 89s(if I can remember correctly) are a little smaller than 90-91 clutches and flywheels. Regardless, it should work for u, since all that matters is the spline count.
