Default denied past 3500rpm

I'm having problems with my 91 civic lx (stock minus cheap ebay intake). This has just happened recently, my car takes a few times to start up. When it does start up it idles at around 500rpm and sounds like its about to die (half the time it does). Then it jumps up to normal idle, but the check engine light comes on. My car will not go above 3500rpm wether its in gear or in neutral. It doesn't seem like the engine isn't getting the gas, its as if my rev limitor got changed from 6500rpm to 3500rpm. Also it runs rough all the time now. Any help on this would be appreciated. I've changed the distributor cap and rotor, and the spark plugs. Could it just be that I need a new distributor?

pull up the passenger side carpet and count the blinking codes on your ecu (count the number of blinks...they will blink closely together to give you the number then take a long pause to restart...you may have more than one)

http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/codes.html

i'd suspect it could be one of several things just based on your description: coil, o2 sensor, etc. (the ecu code will help make a better prognosis)

if you have a tdc issue your timing belt has jumped and maybe the reason why it is throwing the other code and won't let you rev any higher...does it run rough up to then?

remove the outer upper timing belt cover to see the cam gear and rotate the engine (you'll need to see the crank pulley [will be three III marks - the middle I is where you want the aim to] and check the lower timing belt cover as that has a hash mark for timing)

it's been years since i last worked on a d series engine

you will want to get a helm manual as these are great (people sell them on ebay) or you can go to www.helminc.com

If the timing is correct...check your distributor

if you brought it in for them to fix it and they didn't you need to bring it back in...they should be the experts and responsible for finding out what is wrong

is it throwing the same codes?
