Default Fuel, where for art thou?

I have a fuel related problem. At a constant speed, after the car is warmed up, it cuts out fairly regularily and surges. I still get to work but I usually have to light up the tires to make it more fun because I get annoyed. Recently, I let the tank get 8 gallons down and the car would completely lose power like I had run out gas, then start reving again after about 10 seconds. I am assuming that the fuel pump is failing or the strainer on the fuel pump, but would this cause both problems?

Also, the fuel cuts out completely after about 7K (redline is over 8K) and the car doesn't really seem to have the high rpm power it should have. Could these be related or am I being too optimistic that one thing will cure all the cars ills?

i would suggest checking the fuel pressure while the car is running to see if the fuel pump is failing.
