Default Whats the difference between a ZC and regular engine?

looking at this site and the hp ranges from 120-140 depending if its SOHC or DOHC which seems like not much of a difference in HP. so from a ZC with 120-130 HP what the difference to a regualr civic engine with 120 hp in the modern cars? whats the best to get for crx i see they say longblock and some have vtec and soem are just zc

What do you mean by regular civic engine?

The sohc zc is basically a d-series motor. It has the same bore and stroke as a d16. I believe the pistons yield higher compression though. There are actually a lot of different generations of the zc motor but I'm assuming you're talking about the 4th gen civic/crx ones.

There are actually several Sohc Vtec's. Two main ones that we have on our Civic's here in the US, and at least one or two on the JDM models. They aren't anything special though.
The ZC has a strange looking valve cover if you want to quickly ID a photo of one.

What's your price range? Are you looking into something with more than 130 hp? Where do you live?

What's your price range?

It seems like you want something with vtec, be it sohc or dohc. If you want to be cheap (under $700), I'd suggest getting a d16z6 or d16y8.
In my opinion, sohc vtec isn't that great and you'd be better off with a dohc non-vtec motor.

If you don't mind spending about twice as much, you can probably get a b18a (90-91 integra rs/ls/gs 1.8 dohc non-vtec motor) with complete swap for about $1200 or less and then you would also need seperate aftermarket b-series mounts. The motor makes 130 hp and 120 tq.

I think you'd be better off with it. But for the price, the d16z6 or d16y8 might be a better deal.

Wow, what a mess.

The ZC's that are most significant to 88-91 Civics is the Blacktop DOHC ZC. Think of it as a normal 1.6L D-series engine, just with a dual overhead cam head. Mind you, it's more complicated then that, but that's the oversimplified version.

Ask your local shop to drop in a blacktop ZC. That'll suit you fine for now.
