Do you mean a D16Z6, a SOHC ZC, or a SOHC VTEC ZC?
All require the same work, i.e. serious rewiring of the entire car, some screwy custom axle setup, you'll need to find someone to fabricate a driver's side mount at very least... probalby also a trans mount, maybe more. It's enough to drive you nuts and make you never finish the swap. This is nowhere near as easy as any swap into a later body Civic.
Try to get a hold of an 86-87 D16A1 (US Integra, 112hp, DOHC) or a Browntop ZC (JDM Civic/CRX 1.6i-16, EDM Civic/CRX Si, 135hp, DOHC.)
Both of those are pretty much bolt in, and offer much better power over the stock EW/D15A3.

In other words, expect to pay ~$2000 or more to get any VTEC engine in.
Remember, VTEC is not that great. It just removes the low-end effects of a larger cam. If you're like me and can live with a lopey idle and a few less MPG, it makes no difference.

If you had a lot of free time and technical skill, you could transplant a SOHC VTEC head, but you'd loose power because of it. Once again, VTEC isn't that great.
