a zc is kind of a weird engine code. the older generations were a sohc 1.6L found in civic si's and integras i believe. the mid gen and last gen are dohc 1.6L found in the jdm version of the SI.

ZC's can be dohc. It's basically the jdm version of the d-series engines.

The ZC is a Japanese market engine that came about around late '83, all ZC pattern engines share the same bore and stroke, and thus the same 1.6l displacement.

All are stamped "ZC" in the normal engine code location. I'm pretty sure this is a holdover of the old style two letter engine codes.

It started out as a dual cam, pre-OBD fuel injected engine. It had a brown valve cover, hence the common nickname, "browntop."

With the introduction of the '88 Civic body, the dual cam OBD-0 ZC came out. It had a black valve cover, hence "blacktop."

Starting around '89, single cam models began to apear. They were used in lower model G2 Integras of the time, then followed by use in the lower model 5G and 6G Civics and 3G Integras.

Somewhere in the mix, probably in the 5G Civic, the SOHC VTEC ZC was introduced.

The ZC has many US market cousins, such as the D16A1 (a detuned version of the browntop,) the D16A6 (a detuned SOHC ZC,) the D16Z6 and D16Y8 (essentailly a SOHC VTEC ZC.)

i didn't know there was a vtec version of the ZC, i thought they were all non-vtec engines, but then most of my research on them has been the EF7 version of it

i hope to get a DOHC ZC (EF7) for my rex someday

good info Kai! (as usual!)
