Also, I'm not exactly sure if they check to see if the ecu is usdm. So you may be able to pass with a jdm p30 ecu.

The smog referee will smog the engine as a del sol vtec engine (b16a3).
why do you have to convert to OBD1 to put it into a CRX?

what...safety is job one at Ford...just think of the pinto/town cars...or the explorer...or the crown vic with the same fuel tank design as the pinto...or the massive ignition coil recall ford didn't do and over 1000 died...or the massive tranny failures on the taurus...what a great company to be a stockholder and not an owner

Forgot to mention, JDM engines will NOT have a "2" on them. They are simply stamped "B16A" through both generations.

DOHC VTEC was introduced with OBD-0. The PR3 and PW0 ECU's come to mind.

SOHC VTEC didn't come around until OBD-1 time.

Because the b16a engine was only introduced in the del sol vtec. They will compare smog according to the del sol vtec specs. So you have to run the same ecu as the b16a3. The thing is that I don't know if theres a difference between the jdm p30 and the usdm p30. So you might be ok with either.
