Default Any potential? (87 CRX)

What are the potentials with an 87 CRX, motor wise? What bolts in and what can I put in without too much trouble. Are there a lot of mods available? Any links and pics would help out a lot. Theres a guy that's selling one in my area for 500 bucks with a blown motor. Any advice would help out, thanks!

Yeah, probably... where's he at?

Would ZC thumping and 4th gen and on B16 Hybrid clobberin' power be enough for you?

You didn't say if it was carb'd or fuel injected, or how much money/work you wanted to put into it, but FYI, I bought mine with a blown engine for $300, now have around $5k invested and wouldn't trade it for anything. The carbs and manifold were the big ticket items, which I bought new.

Sorry to sound like a noob but how do I tell if its carb'd or fuel injected? The motor is totally blown so I'd have to drop in a complete new one. I'd like to spend right around 3k at the most. Thanks

Gas Fumes in with the pics
The carb'd engine pic isn't showing for me, so here's a link to the way mine was.

You can do a basic rebuild for around $1400, that includes all the new pistons, rings, clutch kit, bearings, boring, balancing, and on a stock engine, you'd get over 30mpg city and close to 40mpg highway with either engine. If you want basic bolt-ons you can do that too, but the "basic" changes a little bit between the two engines.

Does the car you're asking about have a sunroof?

Ok, then you'd be starting with either an HF or DX... a stock HF engine isn't worth modifying, but a DX you can put a down draft weber on to replace the stock carburetor and grab yourself 15-20 HP and the piece of mind knowing you don't have to deal with 30 miles of vaccum lines

I can't really remember that well from seeing it, but as far as I know It was fuel injected. I don't even have that guys number dammit. Maybe I should go take another look at it.....so with about three grand into it, whats the best I can do performance wise. HP/Torque/times. Thanks

If it's an '87, and it doesn't have a sunroof, it can't be stock and be fuel injected.

With a down draft weber carb [~$400 for everything needed], and an engine rebuild [$1400 in parts and machine cost, you build it yourself from there], and maybe a header [$250 + whatever cost you can get an Si oil pan for], you should be in the low 15's to high 14's and still get about 35mpg on the highway. [about 105HP and 90 lb-ft of torque] I'm around the mid to low 14's right now making probably 135-140 crank HP [and around 115 lb-ft], with the engine rebuild, dual sidedraft carbs [$1200 for everything needed], header [same cost], uprated clutch [$400], LSD on the way [$700], poly suspension bushings [$180], and full ignition system [~$300]. The real advantage to a first gen CRX with the stock engine isn't drag racing, it's in the twisties, they make the driver feel apart of the experience in the turns. Any stock engine in a first gen will let you know how fun it can be, and it only gets more fun when you start increasing the power, but as I've found there are levels where you have to start upgrading the chassis and drivetrain to handle the power, since it is real easy to overstep what the car can handle with the engine, and then you do like I do and back the power back off, fix what needs to be fixed and then try again.
