this may sound like a stupid question....
aight, this may make me look stupid, but my boy just got an 88 Honda Civic hatch and since the gauge cluster doesn't come stock with a tachometer, we're tryin to put in a 5 inch racing tach, but the only problem is we don't know how to install it..... 
can somebody please help me out???

The models without the factory tach already have the wiring in the dash for one. Unless you just really want a 5 inch tach, you can find replacement guage clusters (with the factory tach) on Ebay pretty easy. They just plug right in.
If not, there is a blue wire that attaches in the back of the guage cluster that carries the pulse from the ignitor that you can tap into to run your tach.
