Default #6 ecu code

well, im in the process of getting my hatch running, emissioned etc. today i decided to look and see if the ecu was flashing any codes, and it was throwing a #6, which is coolant temp. to my amazement, the previous owner had cut the wires off of the temp sensor, and broke the plug off the sensor itself. i dont think so, but can this cause the car not to start?

the car should still start regardless of a temp sensor

:update: went to the junkyard and picked up the thermo sensor and the harnness plug. wired and plugged everything up and now the car starts. i thought the ignition coil was bad but it was only the thermo sensor.
