Default 1st gen or 2nd gen CRX?

I've always been told to go with 2nd gen rex's. But I have this first gen that is tempting to buy. What should I go with. Its a 87. I was thinking of getting 90 or 91 rex. But someone was like why when the 87's are lighter. To think of it This way is that even though the hp torque and weight differs, it evens it out. What do you guys think I should get. I really want to get a rex. By the way im thinking on doing an engine swap as well. b16a, but that wont be untill i get the money. I might gut it as well. Thanks for your input.

I got some facts:

87 crx si
91@5500 hp
93@4500 tq
1890 lbs
1488 displacement (cc)

88-89 crx si
105@6000 hp
98@5000 tq
2017 lbs
1590 displacement (cc)

90-91 crx si
108@6000 hp
100@5000 tq
2174 lbs
1590 displacement (cc)

I think the only reason is that 90-91 has 108 hp and 100 tq is because different ecu settings and a slightly different cam.

The only reason im having some doubts is like I said I have always been told to go 2nd gen or nothing. I don't know why!? What do you think. The only reason I think it is the body style is nicer (to me at least). Im going to gut the rex. Can someone reply. I think I might buy it Soon. But I need your advice. Thanks for listening to me.

For some reason, I remember seeing specs that had the weight a lot lower then that.

The first generation CRX/ third gen Civic body is a more "hardcore" perfomance build. It is much lighter, but it is also older and more outdated. A few companies make aftermarket parts fot them, they are just few and far between, but it swaps many parts including the engine (D16A1) with the first generation Integra. If you want to go for the absolute fastest, lightest car possible, this is the body to use.

The second generation is a lot heavier, but it is still a very lightweight car overall. Everyone and their grandmother makes aftermarket parts for them, they use a fully independant double wishbone suspension, they have OBD-1 computer systems that are easier to swap with, etc. It swaps some parts with the second generation Integra, however the Integra B18A1 engine will not bolt straight in. It is cheaper and easier to build this body, but you will blend in with all the other second gen CRX's.

I prefer the first gen body. They're cheap, fun, and simple. I'm a big fan of the D15A3 Si engine, even if it is "only" a 12 valve. h:

I think I found a company that makes turbo manifolds for the first gen Si, too. :naughty:

2nd gen body is tighter though in style, but you said you were gonna make it a racer anyway and are looking for lightness so nevermind h:

By the way, if the '87 you are looking at is not an Si, don't bother. That will make your future engine swap 10x more difficult because the Si was the only fuel injected CRX in '87, so the other models would require a full FI conversion when you swap.

Thanks Kai, yes I do like both generations. It is an 87 si, I knew about the fuel injected part, but I didnt know about the teg parts. I think I just might go with the second gen like you said Kai. I really dont know any companies or websites that make first gen parts for the rex. I thought I did its justs second gen. I am going to swap the engine so that the mustangs must go down.

Thanks CRX_stg3 I think the second gen body is really sweet too. Nice REX too, really nice. What type of engine do you have?

Swap kits do exist for B-series engines into the first gen CRX/third gen Civic body, so don't worry about swapping. Both cars can be adapted to take any B-series engine. It just costs a little more with the old body, but the old body is faster in the end.

the 88-89 hf model is the lightest body style they have. i believe its almost another 200 lighter than the si(1800 or 1900?). as for lighter than a 1st gen i dunno. only thing is the HF has the blue interior...wa wa wa.....
