breakin in a motor...
ok so i have heard many different estimates on what a good mileage to smash on a new motor is. i have heard 2500, 1000, and 500. which do you think is a good mileage to meet before i run the piss outa her? anyone? i know someone knows! the shop its at said 500 would be more than enough to break in new the new bottom end....are they fulla it?

500 should be enough, if u want to be really careful then 1500 is more than enough, u just want to run it at all different rpms and all different speeds, without running it consistantly at 1 speed, and dont run the piss out of it right away

I would change your oil at 20 miles. Also the proper way to break in a motor is to fluctuate the rpms and never cruise. It takes 500-600 miles to actually break in the engine. After that, change your oil again.

I've got roughly 350 miles on the engine i just finished building. Here's how I've broken it in thus far:
Put straight 30W NON-DETERGENT oil in the engine. Run the engine for 30-40 minutes with the car still up on jacks. Shut it off, change the oil and filter.
Put straight 30W NON-DETERGENT oil in the engine. Drive the car for 100 miles. Like someone said earlier, you don't want to cruise. Vary the RPM, don't rocket up and down the tach. Just let the engine slowly accelerate and decelerate. Don't take the RPM past 4k. Change the oil and filter.
Put normal 10W30 oil in the engine. NO SYNTHETICS. Use standard basic motor oil. Drive for 300-500 miles like you did before. Don't rev past 4,500 and vary the RPM as much as possible. Again, don't shoot the engine through its revs. Let it run up and down slowly. Change the oil and filter.
I'm on that last step now. I'm going to change the oil when I have 400 miles on the engine. During the next 500 miles I'm gonna start taking the revs up to around 5,500, but still varying the RPM and no race driving yet. I'm not gonna redline her until I get 1,000 miles on the engine. I'm probably being overly cautious, but I'd much rather be too careful than too careless. I'd burst into tears if I blew her up after putting this mucn money and effort in.

yep thats about it, some ppl may say more or less miles but just keep fluctuating rpms and dont rev the piss out of it at first until uve driven it reliably for a while, gotta make sure everything seats correctly b4 reving it really high where everything might possibly swing out of balance and cause damage or cause something to break. its actually really hard to baby an engine, well for me anyway but thats cuz i have a lead foot

i recommend:
changing oil/filter at 125 miles
dont rev above 4000 rpms (sorry NO VTEC FO YOU)
try taping a magnet to the oil drain plug or to the filter
change oil again at 1000 miles
i personally decide whether to use synthetic or conventional oil at the 1000-1200 mark.
i used mobil1 full synthetic since 1200 miles (38k on it now), motor has also never seen fuel below 93 octane, premium for the last 38k miles consistently.
i burn exactly .5 of a quart between 3000 mile oil changes.
started doin it since i started using synthetic
this is largely due to the fact that my block is power honed, its also FRM.
i have to say that synthetic is king, i dont pay for my mobil1 anyway so its all good for me, but if you can afford it USE IT all the time.
my motor takes ridiculous abuse too, rev limiting at 8k every night, a release bearing blown in 38k miles.
ive actually got the car on stands right now, adding a ACT Street Kevlar/Organic street clutch, and a race prepped tranny, hopefully i will go forced induction soon or sell the car and get a bike.

just don't use synthetic oil when breaking in motor...its to slick and lose power.
