Car warm up question...
Ok i cant seem to get a strait anwser on this, but most of the time (meaning if i am not in a hury) i will let my car idle for a few minutes, even if its warm outside, when its being started for the first time that day. My theroy is that when things heat up they expand, thats a lot of parts in an engine that expand and contract, so i figure the slower, and more easy you do it, the better for your engine.
Now my dad tells me that i shouldnt do that, that its bad for the car, and i should jut start it and go, but be easy on it for a the first few minutes.
I dont know whos right, i usually just let my car idle until it idles down to 800 (where it usiually rests when its up to operating temp) and that usually takes a minute or two...
Is it bad? ANy input would be useful
Thanks

i think you are partly right but maybe for the wrong reasons. I let my car warm up too but only so the oil gets hotter and thinner and completely covers the internal parts before i go driving. I don't think it matters about your parts expanding and what rate that happens at. It's good that you think about these things though. The theory behind my warm up period is I want the oil that has drained to the bottom of my oil pan to get up to the cylinder head and piston rings, coat the parts before i go. thats all

I do it for that reason also, especiall ynow that i am runnin out of spec with 10w-30 (its hot, so i figured it is better, ill change back when winter comes)

yeah your cool, don't worry about it. hey if your car runs 5w-30 and your running 10w-30, i would change back. Honda recommends it's oil viscosity because they test the cars with all kinds of different combinations. They recommend the best viscosity for your engine. In the summer you want thinner oil anyways, why make your engine work harder to spin thicker oil when it's hot outside?

In the manual it says to start it up and let it run for approx a minute(this would be for lubrication...it gives the oil pump a chance to put oil throughout the engine.
It also says in the manual that a cold engine burns more gas than a hot engine. So even in the winter time....1 minute then you should go. Just dont go above 2 or 3 k rpms....thats a big no no!!!
Thats my $.02 and i dont thnk i'm changing the way i drive!

I think that more gas is used because the Cat. Conv. needs to be hot in order to work correctly. thats why cars smell like shit when you first start them in the cold. BTW im using 5w-30 mobile 1, its great, makes the Rev really smooth.

YES!!! I would hate to get a used car from a person like that! I feel sorry for that car! My neighbors do that to their cars.
