yeh...i've participated on many of these. There is always somethin to be said. I just wish someone would to the ULTIMATE test on oil. Take identical cars and run them with different oil's and viscositiys for hundreds of thousands of miles on a dyno or somethin similar and see whiche engines wear out faster. But there are sooooooo many variables that come into driving that really cant be "evenly" simulated on cars. I thnk oil debates will go on forever as long as engines need oil to run.

I'll let it run for 15-30 seconds in the warm weather and let it go down to a nice idle in the cold. Besides, that way, in the cold weather, the cabin heats up easier. Since I have an auto, I've got the remote start, so the car is always nice and warm in winter.

if its cold out and its the 1st time ive driven the car car for a few hours, i let the car sit for about 30 sec before i get going. your car warms up faster when u drive it. there's no point in warming up your car for more than a minute. by then, oil is already circulating thru the system. i just go easy on the engine till its at operating temp.

ive always used 10w30 in my hondas. you only need the thinner 5w30 if you live in cold climates. the thinner oil circulates faster on cold startup

Why do u let it go down to an idle the cold? That usually takes a good 10 minutes(it did with my 4cyl accord lx, i gotta wait till this winter to see how fast my av6 accord and 93 civic heat up just idleing)....just let it run for 1-2 minutes and take off(not hard..a nice smooth acc.)...warm air shouild be coming into the cabin in about 3 minutes of doin about 30-40 mph on a back road. Quicker on an interstate. This way u save gas as well.

But the ideal thing would be remote start!! Can a remote start feature be installed by honda? Do they support it? I want to add a vibration sensor to my existing keyless entry system on my accord as well as that if tis possible. That'll be SOOO helpful in the winter. And when ur in a hurry too comin outta the grocery store.

Your Dad is right.
In the winter, 1 minute idling is more than enough time, then just drive the car, but take it very easy on the accelerator until the car is fully warmed up.

Anything more than that is just a waste of gas, and is actually bad for the car. Excessive idling is actually bad for engines, and contaminates your oil.

well...MY car did this for sure! I remember way back when i thought i had to wait for it to warm up..it took a good 10 minutes with no revving the engine. Just straight idle, but it was a good 20 degrees out too.
