For 3rd Generation Experts
After lurking for so long, I’ve decided that if you folks can’t help me…no one can.
I have a 89 Accord Lxi Coupe with 156K. The car would start up in the morning but then would be nearly impossible to start after 2-4-6- hours. If I removed the fuse for the fuel injectors and cranked it, it would cough and sputter. Put the fuse back in and it would start. Once started, it would sometimes hesitate when accelerating and the idle would be extremely irregular. I suspected the fuel injectors were leaking and thus replaced them with ones from a salvage yard. The exact same symptoms are still there. I have replaced the Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Air Filter, and fuel filter. New plugs were installed yesterday and they are completely covered with a black powder residue. I know this means its running rich. The Check Engine Light and LED under seat do not register any abnormalities. I suspected a vacuum leak and tried to find it using propane but no luck. Does anybody know what else I should be checking on this car or is familiar enough with this generation and is aware of a ‘common’ problem that I’m over looking? A fuel injected car that is running rich shouldn’t be this difficult to trouble shoot. Thanks in Advance Folks!
