Auto Transmission Woes

welcome to the board!
I have 3 questions:
1. When I first got my car in May 2002 ('02 LX I4 Sedan), I barely drove it. So for maintenance, I went by the manual. I got the first oil change exactly 6 months later (November 2002), and the car had 2500 miles on it. The second oil change was done on May 2003, and the car had 4900 miles on it. Both times, the dealer checked all fluid levels, and everything else you could think of (their service rocks  ). My question is, is it safe for the oil to stay in the car 6 months at a time? The manual's "Severe" schedule recommends oil changes every 6 months or 3750 miles...
2. I am driving a lot more now, and in the past 2 months, I've put over a 1000 miles on the car. I guess the 8000 mile mark is coming soon. They put a sticker on my windshield stating that I have to have service done at 8000 miles. Shouldn't it be the 7500 mile service?
3. I have an Auto tranny, and I am considering getting a Tranny Cooler + Filter. What's your opinion on this?

TRANSMISSION PROBLEM OR SOMETHING ELSE?
I'm new to the group - desperately need advice.
I have a 97 Prelude (Automatic/Tiptronic) - over the past 2 months on a cold start when putting my car into first gear something sticks & the car shudders forward (almost like popping the clutch on a standard), it does this between first & second & revs pretty high then it sudders forward again, something keeps sticking & the car hesitates between gears - it's pretty bad & it's getting progressively worse.
It only does this during the first 5 min. of driving & on a cold start, once the car is warmed up it runs great. The transmission fluid is turning brown as opposed to that pinkish color it should be - can anyone offer me advice as to what the problem may be.
I'm trying to get a second opinion before forking out large cash to replace the transmission if in fact that's the problem. What if I had a transmission flush or tune up, would that make a difference? Could it be the choke????
Bare with me, I know nothing about cars. Thanks!

One question....
How often should you change tranny fluid?
When i bought my ride it had 56k on it
One of the 1st tings I did was to flushed the tranny fluid.
I replaced the fluid with synthetic tranny fluid in it.
I'm on 62k now.

Okay since we are talking about trannies, when changing autotranny fluilds (ATF) I can only drain 3 quarts or so from unpluging the tranny bolt I know theres more fulid in the tranny then that. Do you recommend this method? Also how often do you recommend changing the fuild (MILAGE WISE) when doing it this method instead of doing a compelete ATF Flush.
thanks
Bruce

Wow, what responses,, looks like I might need to start my own web site ??Word of warning tho gents,, If I seem cranky,, well, its cause I am, Im old ,working on cars is not fun for me.. But I DO enjoy talking to folks that want to improve their Cars or knowledge. You see, Im a shop Forman of a Honda dealership and would rather deal with an informed customer then a dunderhead that THINKS he knows about cars. Since responding to every question on here personally will take me too much time, I will answer all as a group,, Look for your name.. Might take 2 messeges ?? Be also warned that I will not give out my name due to the fact that maybe Someone from Honda Lurks here and maybe I might say some thing not so nice things about their product and believe me,, The product Engineers know my real name.. First topic,, Cjamie,, " positive Shift" means... We cant build a good Auto transmission like Toyota Can, we dont know whats wrong,, our engineers suck,, so we are calling it " Positive shift" Sooo?? Depending on your year make and model, I have NO clue !!Please add the above info because It does make a difference,, In some models, there is a fix ( somewhat), but with out Info,, I cant help you..It dosent mean I dont want to ??Get with the program Bro.. Thanks for your Question..

Part 2,,, Dliske,, Thanks for the welcome,, ask away?? Dont be shy, other wise I might think you are gay and then I wont talk to you at all !! LOL.. LX 4Cyl.. Oil changes I usually do at 3500 miles cause its easier for me to add up then the 3750 Honda recommends for severe, which everyone is in, if you live in the United States..The reason you have 8K miles on your sticker is because your last change was at 4900 miles,,they put 8K for your next change as compared to 7.5 K.. No big deal,, quit being anal.. Just make sure you get your tires rotated at that time,, cause they are due then,,By the way,,, Thanks for visiting your local dealership for your service work,,Look for another posting comparing dealerships against independent garages in the near future.. NEXT!! Elixr007,,You dont have no Darn 'Choke" They disappeared with carbs, ( thank the Lord) your car ( Fuel injected) has a fuel inrichment programmed into your Computer..Your trans.sticking in 1st when cold is probably due to a shift solenoid or passsage way in the trans due to lack of fluid changes,, I suggest a flush by your dealer or changing fluid, useing Honda fluid at least 3 times,, The detergents in new fluid will free up stuck shift soleniods.Sounds like thats where your problem origionates..Darn hard to tell with out seeing the car and sitting here.. My crystal Ball broke a while back. LOL.. NEXT !!MrChan,,metal shavings are normal,, Dont mean a thing Bro,,Starting to slip,, you sure or are you just paranoid?? Besides,, your trans is warranteed for 100K miles, Relax.. Many of these other guys would love to be in your shoes.. NEXT!! Night Rider,,I suggest fluid changes every 15K miles,,But then,, Im anal too,,Useing synthetic fluid I guess is a good idea?? Beats me,,I never bought a Honda and changed to synthetic and bought a few more all at the same time and drove all of them at the same time for 100K miles to see the difference ?? NEXT! b12ucehuy,, Where you guys think up these Names?? The Honda trans holds 6 qts, when you drain, all you get is 2.75 qts out,,The rest is in the valve bodies and torque converter,, A Flush is good,, but, if you change every 15K miles,, a flush is not needed,, besides,, your trans is warrantedd for 100 K miles,, relax,, Now I dont mean to beat the crap out of your transmission,, do the recommended changes,, and then IF it does take a dive,, you have the recommended maintience reciepts to support your claim.. Thanks for your Questions,, Im tired now..

Got another question for you Lager
i have an accord with an f22b2 in it. its an auto
sometimes when my tranny shifts, and this especially happens into 2nd and 4th (if im in 4th in a low speed, like 30mph) it really feels like its shifting rough and almost clanks into gear. sometimes it will almost pull back and then jerk forward into the next gear. i want to do a flush soon but i'm not sure where in my area i can do that. my engine has 116000 miles on it, and who knows how often the tranny fluid has been flushed/replaced.
would a flush help with my problem? whats your diagnosis?
and another thing, my friend was saying that there is a transmission fluid filter in the transmission casing? i have no idea. it kind of makes sense but i'm not sure
and i think i speak for most of us when i say that we're extremely grateful to have you on this board. it's quite a great resource to have you here. i really appreciate you taking your time and knowledge to further educate us in taking care of our cars.

A_D..Yer the lucky one cause Im still on the forum and will answer you directly, not cause Im feeling helpfull/bleeding heart but FINIALLY I got some good info !! 1997 Accord Auto transmission..You guys spouting off f22b2 #s to me, dont mean a darn thing to me,, Just gimme a year a model !!.. Back to the issue,, It sounds like you have a Shift solenoid/ passage blockage problem.. With out normal fluid changes,, the solenoids ( which control fluid path for gear shift) get sticky, they build up a crust due to heat..Honda Fluid has a great amount of detergent qualities,, thus my suggestion..Fluid Flushes done by many repair shops will change ALL the fluid, but wont exercise the shift soleniods, thus cleaning sticky soleniods or passageways.. YThe best way to clean internal solenoids is to jack the front tires off the ground,, Drain fluid, add 3 qts, run car thru all transmission ranges,, drain,, refill,, do again and agin,,, 3 times.. This might correct your problem,, this might mean you have to replace a certain shift soleniod?? If it dosent work?? Your friend is correct,, the inlet screen is internal,, you cant clean it with out tearing the trans down.. Life sucks sometimes..deal with it.. And quit sucking up to me,, will get you now where..Glad to have you here Comments just want me to gag.. Honestly,, Thanks
