99 Accord EX 4cyl - timing belt question - searched archives already
Hello,
I know this is probably a question that is asked too often, but I searched the archives and found too many different answers.
My wife has has her 1999 Honda Accord EX 4cyl since it was new. It has 59xxx miles. According to the 'normal' maintenance schedule, the 60k service is an oil change and a bunch of checks (text from Honda web site included at bottom of post).
The question:
When should the timing belt be replaced? It is NOT listed any any maintenance schedule on the Honda web site.
Thanks in advance,
richardp

What Im wondering is why it is in fact 105k on the F23, but 90k on the F22. Shouldnt it be the same belt? And if when the belt is replaced on the F22, why is only good for another 90k miles? My guess would be that when its replaced with the newer belt, it should be good for the same 105k miles. If I find out the belts are identical, Im saving my money until 105,000 miles on the 96!

The mileage on the belt can likely go well past 100k however, as a matter of safety you should replace the belt before signs of wear. I have a bud running 168k on his Tegs OE belt....
If you are concerned I'd pull back the black plastic cover near the oil cap and check the belt condition. You'll also want to replace the water pump and balancer shaft belts too when the timing belt is changed.
I've seen more honda's with destroyed engines over old seized waterpumps then snapped timing belts.

Timing belt
They wanted $700 to replace my timing belt, water pump and exterior belts (98 Accord V6).
I replaced them for about $200 (OEM).
You'll need a special tool to hold the crankshaft pulley when you remove the center bolt and when you properly torque it (182 ft.lbs.). I made one for myself.

heh thats alot of work but good luck, if i were u i would wait until at least 85-90k to do all that crazy work even though honda can gove over 100k with same belt and yeah a good mechanic thats know honda would charge $200 and do a excellent job. my car is 8yrs old and only 80k i need to stop driving.
