Default New 2003 6-Speed Coupe - crappy fuel efficiency. Help!

2 weeks old, 600+ miles. Took it on a road trip today and it ate ~12.5 gallons on a 260 mile trip. Altogether it came to about 21 MPG and all the miles were in 6th gear highway at ~ 70-75 MPH. Any thoughts? Anyone else having this problem? IS this a "break-in" issue?

How long do you live in VTEC? Do you use 6th gear very much? Obviously you either love to play with the car or forgot you have an extra gear. Or both. Because at cruse at 70 mph that engine in sixth should be spinning ~ 2000 rpm. This should get 25-30 mpg on the highway.

How many people was in the car? How much luggage and weight? Is your tire pressure enough? All these can add to crappy miles.

Two people, no luggage. Haven't checked the tire pressure yet. Not burning oil or coolant as far as I can tell. Oh, and in 6th gear at 75mph the tach was at 2500.

Well, congrats on the car bro. She is a beauty

Only thing I can think of is that it's not broken in yet and the fuel efficiency will increase over time, or something is wrong with the ECU fuel mapping and you're running too fuel rich. Noone else has this problem, so I'd guess the latter. That's weird

I agree with the above post - will definitely get better once it is broken in. And I mean, not right after the first 1000 miles. From my experience with new cars mileage gets better up to about 15000 miles and then stabilizes.

It's also a well known fact that cars will sip the fuel greedily when new. If this still happens around 3000-3500 miles, then complain, but it should go away.
