Why does my automatic shift at 6,000 instead of redline?

Maybe because the rev limiter is obviously much higher than 6,000 RPMs? The conclusion has been reached that it is ECU mapping and lets the automatic shift in first at redline (6250) but at only 6000 in second. Not a rev limiter.

Furthermore the question is being asked because my car used to redline every gear, not just below redline.

Not just automatics have rev limiters...pretty much any car has a rev limiter with fuel cutoff, but can you over rev your car ? yes...try dropping from 4th at 90 mph to 1st...you'll over rev...

I thought most hondas had the protector for 1st...so you cant shift to it unless you are going under a certain MPH....or at least my accord does. But dropping from 4th @90mph to 2nd would work

rev limiters are made for accelerating, not downshifting...if you pop it into first or second doing 90, you're screwed.

Honda's and Nissan's (not Toyota, although the Celica is an exception) have redlines that aren't the same as fuel cutoff. Consider it to be a recommended shift point if anything. Granted you won't get anything beyond revving it 200RPM's over, but it won't hurt it.

Know what you speak of before you make an ass out of yourself.

You are a complete moron. He was explaining the difference between fuel cutoff and redline and said that going a bit above redline wouldn't hurt. Not that you should do it constantly.

You shouldn't do it when the engine's cold, yes. You shouldn't do it if you have a rotary engine, correct. But when it's warm, woopdee do. Granted it's more wear, just like 6000RPM will be more wear on the engine than 4000RPM. But there's nothing dictating that it's disasterous, people do it all the time.

i said you *Shouldnt*..... thats ALL i said.... you go ahead and call Honda or Nissan, and record the conversation stating that Revving past redline is perfectly fine and that you *should* do it..... then ill close my mouth... otherwise... all im saying is you *shouldnt* do it..... thats all.

That's fine. I never said you SHOULD do it either, all you do is save time from shifting from one gear to the next. A lot of race car drivers do this a lot just to save a second or two at the most.

I would never do it because it's pointless and more wear. Your original post just sounded as if it is catastrophic to do so, and I wanted to point out the differences in redline and fuel cutoff, and why there is such a difference.
