Why does my automatic shift at 6,000 instead of redline?

Yeah...I noticed my car stopped redlining lately...granted its a 4 banger 5th gen....

I suspect that the Tach's may not be very durable and accurate after a few years...why?

I did an experiment on my car manually shifting the auto. Every time I approached redline on the tach, but not quite redline, I hit fuel cut off...I did this for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.....

200HP, not 150.

I did some testing today...it redlines in first gear and shifts between 6250 and 6300, but in second it shifts at about 6050...I dunno. I guess second gear is mapped differently.

Noel, maybe...but I think my tach is fairly accurate as it redlines in first but not second. From what it sounds like, your tach is off by a bit.

automatics come with a "rev limiter" on them so they dont over rev. most are set below redline. mind shifts at 6k instead of 6500.

Maybe it's time for a new transmission. h:
Our TL never shifts at redline at 2nd gear, and sometimes not 1st either. It depends on what it's mood is, and how it maps the gears.

This should be normal. Check your tranny fluid as a precaution.

My rev limiter is like 6500...fuel cut off point.

First gear hits about 6250-6300, at or slightly past redline. Second gear does not. Must be ECU mapping.

Shawn: How does your fabricated Geo shift? :fawk:

you should never rev past redline.....

I never have, but I know where the fuel cutoff point is :slap:

it is your rev limiter... it prevents damage to your engine... why keep asking the question when it's been answered several times?

well, I know I can manualy shift and at 1st gear I can hold it open and it wont go past 6300. now if I have it in P or N then it will more then redline. adn its ok to go just a little past redline for a few sec factorys make the red line below the engines capasity for safety. In other words my red line READS at 6500 but is probby more like 6700-7000 although I wouldnt hit that very often if any at all.
