2000 Accord Manual Trans Gear Change not Smooth
Hi,
I have a 2000 Honda Accord EX with Manual Trans (approx 95K miles). Lately I have noticed that when my car is stopped at a signal or in the garage etc, I cannot change the gear to either reverse or first. The gear just does not seem to fall. Then i release my clutch a little bit and the gear will fall smoothly. Is this normal? Is there anything I need to get checked.
I just had an oil change and the mechanic mentioned that there was nothing wrong with the clutch and I did not have to change it till about 110K.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Sunny.

It's totally normal for it not to go into reverse smoothly/easily on the first attempt, just depends. For first, it's more rare (this is when sitting still) but can happen on rare occasions. For either, the proper thing to do is to move the lever through the other forward gears a few times and then re-attempt engaging first or reverse, not letting the clutch up (although that will work).

reverse gear is most of the times hard to shift from a stand still. its normal, the 1st however should go in if your clutch pedal is depressed,
if its only first thats not going in when the pedal is depressed, then your synchorizer rings are worn out. if all forward gears are not going in, that could mean your clutch is not disengaging from your flywheel and the synchronizer ring is not allowing you to shhift into first or other gears.
i bet its your synchros at first and second gears is the problem

ive only done taking apart gears when i use to go to auto school. my main stregth is driveability issues and no start conditions and engine performance. but sicne you told me that your problem affects second gear as well, then im pretty much sure that you need to change the synch gears for first and second gear.
cost might vary depending on the shop. you will probably get charged like a clutch job rate.
you cant do this at home coz it requires using a press to take apart the gears.
try looking for used tranny at junk yards and weigh your options on wh3re you could save money.
while your at it, might as well put in new clutch

you know what, I have a 93 ford explorer like this. Its manual trans. When at a stop light. sometiems I have to like push my body hard to get the car to roll a little bit so I can change gear or even get into a gear from neutral.
One guy told me I have a worn transmission. like the sycho's are worn or something. Im not sure what it is personally.

you have the same case of synchro problems.
the synchronizer rings are located in between the 1st and second gear and 3rd and fourth gear. 5th has one i believe and a separate one for reverse.
the synchronizers slows down the gears until they are about the same speed and then allows you to shift.

I HAVE THE SAME PROB. BUT my fith and rfevers just doesnt go in.for fith, i'll press the clutch and push it in to fith gear, but it doesnt go in completly to engage the fith gear. then i'll releas the clutch and it kicks out of fith and grinds very hurtfully. but for reverse, it just doesnt go in at all. like something is blocking that gear.
