Looking to buy used & Q's about Japan built Accords
Hi everyone,
I was previously interested in getting a Legend, but given the stories about the maintenance costs, I've been turned away from them for the most part.
I am interested in the 6th Gen Honda Accords, particularly the earlier (98-99) models as they will fall into my price range; I don't want to spend too much more than 10k. I am also very interested in the 7th Gen, but don't want to spend that kind of money right now, as I don't want to finance the majority of the cost. I'll probably buy a 7th Gen after I see what mid-cycle changes are made, and keep using whatever car I get right now as a daily driver.
Does anyone have any information about what color combinations were available for these model years? I'm specifically interested in the LX and LX V6, but the EX-L I4 could be of interest as well.
Also, I've seen some of the Accords with a "JH" VIN number. I thought all the USDM Accords for 6th Gen were built in Marysville? If anyone has any information about Japanese built Accords, either 6th Gen or 7th Gen, I would appreciate being enlightened about the numbers that were built.
Thanks.

Thanks for the color info. I am interested in the Dark Blue Velvet and San Marino Red colors, but Flamenco Black Pearl (?) would be very doable.
The color of the 2000 SE (red) is also very nice, but that might be more than I want to spend.

carefully check the VIN# if it starts with "J" then it was built in Japan, otherwise it was built in somewhere else, most likely US.
but yeah i know this guy my friend's bf, has 6th G accord built in Japan, according to what he said, it was pain in da ass to find the right one.

I've looked mostly on ebaymotors and autotrader at the Accords, and several of them have the "J" for Japan VIN indicator. Either there's some underhanded conspiracy or there are indeed 6th Gen Accords to be had.
I thought it was going to be tough to find the LX/EX/SE in the color/mile/price combination I wanted. Now I am determined to find a Japan built unit as well; it's a preference I have based on past experience.

About 2% of 6th gen Accords were built in Japan. Where do I get this from? I have no idea. But I remember it from somewhere. IMO, you're wasting your time looking for a Japanese built Accord. There are no UAW workers in Marysville.
It's Black Flamenco Pearl...and SM Red is only available on the Coupe. Let's see..ahhh...I can't remember the sedan red color, but it's a darker red.
Are you looking at a Coupe or Sedan?

Thanks for getting that figure for me. I'm looking for a sedan, and as I mentioned above, probably a LX/EX/SE with the I4 engine. As much as I'm pushing for a manual transmission, I think that might be a battle the missus will win. What with all the stop and go driving I do in traffic, I suppose I could live with an automatic. I'm still interested in the V6 models, but I think that the additional operating costs would detract from the purpose of this vehicle: to be a low cost daily driver.
So far, of the dozens of Accords I've looked at online or in print ads, about 5% have the built in Japan VIN. However, they generally aren't in the color that I want (usually white or silver). As I'm not in a huge rush to buy, and I can wait a few weeks or a month if necessary, I have the luxury of being patient.
I'll post again if I see a Japan built Accord with the right color/trim options. Thanks for your replies, though.

Yep, my 6th gen was made in Japan. 99 LX.
Flamenco Black Pearl (NH-592P) with quartz (light gray) interior.
Oh, and I think the 99 seats are a lot better looking than the 98 (unless you get leather)...just something to keep in mind if that concerns you.
