Default How to read check engine code?

Check engine light came up on my 99 Accord. Is there a way to read a code without a scanner?

go to autozone and give them a credit card and your drivers license and they will let you borrow the reader and read the codes in the parking lot. After the codes are read return the reader and go from there. I have a 96 accord and the obd2 connector is behind the front ashtray. I do not know if in the 99 its in the same location. It could be on the left under the driver side dash.

It's in the left side of the dash below the knee bolster. You can use jumper wire to jump two of the correct pins, but it's easier to just go to AutoZone. Get back to us with the code and search next time you have such a generic question.

Went to Autozone today. Code is P1457. I tightened the gas cap - it looked good for me and reset check engine light. I'll see if it comes back. Does someone else have better suggestion?

p1456 = gas cap

p1457 = leak in EVAP system (maybe cvs valve, or some solenoid near the gas tank)

I've read that it can be a number of things. Not sure how diagnose this properly but I'll try to replace CVS first since it is most common part to go bad and there is a Honda TSB on that http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/at...7&d=1107021677

if that doesn't fix it then I'll try bypass valve and two way valve. Is there a good way to test these valves? I really don't want to replace a lot of parts for nothing.
