Default P0401 EGR code on '95 V6

I have a '95 V6 that is setting P0401. I reset it once and it came back after about 45 miles. There are 118K miles on the clock. I'm the 2nd owner, and I have all the service paperwork from the original owner and it's never had any EGR work that I can find.

I've done some searching and came up with a number of posts relating to 6th gen's with an EGR problem and recall/warranty extension.

Does anyone know whether the same issue exists with the '95 V6 EGR system? I was planning to follow the Helms EGR debug procedure this coming weekend, but now I'm wondering if I should be anticipating the clogged manifold problem?

Thanks,
Lou

It's a pretty easy repair on that vehicle. You should check the pipe but it probably won't be clogged. You can pull the plate off of the intake manifold (6 bolts but be careful with the gasket) and the clogging should be there. Clean the EGR valve and check it's operation. You should be good after that.

Thanks for the tips - just to clarify, when you say pull the "plate" off the intake manifold, are you talking about removing the EGR valve from the intake manifold, or pulling the entire intake manifold and removing some sort of plate? I'm pretty good at turning wrenches but this is my first EGR job - I understand how it works in principle but haven't taken the top end off this engine yet.

Thanks, Lou

There is a small rectangular plate that bolts onto the intake manifold. I'm talking about pulling that off and you will see what needs to be cleaned right away.

Default Fixed it!!

Thanks for the help, this one was relatively easy once I pulled the EGR chamber cover off the intake manifold. I took some before and after pictures for reference, for those who need this fix:
