95 accord v6 crazy rpm gauge

I had something similar on my BMW. The gauges went crazy without any apperent reason. Not to say it would be you issue but it ended up being the engine grounding.

It was coroded so my mechanic just added a grounding cable heavy gauge between the engine and the chasis.

im throwing a code now an its my egr system... could that be part of the problem??

if it was a coil wouldnt it actially die...

For 95 V-6 the coil generates a tach signal which it sends back to the cluster. That must be a separate circuit because I've heard of a couple cases where a flaky tach was cured by replacing the coil. And the engines ran just fine.

Only the first couple years of the V-6 were like that. Older 4-cyl tach signal is created by the ignitor. Later (98+) the tach signal is created by the ECU.

jrw1818, you haven't said what year is YOUR car?

I think the EGR is a separate problem.

96' sorry... so it is the coul like i thought it would be....

I think its the same as 95. IF SO, then the coil can cause the flaky tach while the engine runs OK.
